Both memberships provide the hunter with a My Deer link that groups together all photos and videos for each member. A My Ranch link allows both member types to zoom directly over their ranch or hunting lease "headquarters" with a single mouse click, then quickly move to any other location on the ranch. Both member types also have access to a "Member" and a "Deer" Log Book. The Deer Log book allows members to store all their data and photos/videos of harvested and live deer, and the ability to print or email B&C Score Sheets on any buck.

Gold Members have the added features of maintaining a Log Book on all their Stands, Feeders, and Food Plots, as well as a complete library of past and current Biology reports and game surveys. Most importantly, Gold Members have a complete set of "Analytics" which include graphs and charts that highlight how a ranch or lease, and it's deer herd is progressing over time. Finally, Gold Members can anonymously "Compare" their ranch or lease to surrounding member ranches or leases to see how they stack up in all the key measurement areas.

Re: Fawning Dates

Great Colorado mulie photos there ChrisWD, good stuff.  That doe in the first photo makes even my fat belly hurt!

From visiting with many South Texas ranchers, it looks like the first round of fawns are up and doing well.  There should be another round of fawns hitting the ground in the  next week or two and then the bulk of the fawns should be on the ground.  Fawns usually come in spurts separated by three to four week periods, just like the rut.  Remember, the gestation of a whitetail is 200 days, so those does bred in their first estrus cycle have their fawns already on the ground and those are the ones you are seeing now.  The does bred in the second estrus cycle will be arriving soon.
If more of your fawns are born in the second estrus cycle than the first, you either have too many does or too few bucks.  Either way, your does are not being bred in a timely manner and you can correct all of that with proper trigger management.

ChrisWD and I recently visited far West Texas the past several days.  We toured three of the largest counties in West Texas visiting ranches and collecting more brush samples.  We did see some mule deer fawns and it appears it is going to be a HUGE fawn survival rate this year in the desert.

Re: Fawning Dates

I realize the conversation is about whitetails, but since we do mention mulies on here from time to time, I thought I'd post this.  My family and I just got back from a week in south central Colorado.  And I think I have a pretty rough idea now about the approximate fawning dates for mule deer in that area:

You can almost see the fawn bulging through; looks uncomfortable.

Re: Fawning Dates

We are about half way in the pens. seeing a few outside of the pens, also.

Webb County sure is pretty in the early spring.

Re: Fawning Dates

Seeing more and more every trip to the ranch.  The mama's are really bringing them to the feeders now too.  I get a little more confident at fawn survival when they quit leaving them alone.

Re: Fawning Dates

Fawns are on the ground in Dimmit county. Right on schedule and great fawning cover this year.

Re: Fawning Dates

Re: Fawning Dates

I have known Joe my entire life, good man for sure.  His ex wife was my high school English teacher, so any mispellings or grammatical errors you find me type is strictly her fault!

Last year, I am not sure of the largest deer harvested in the county as there were so few.  I am aware of only a handfull of 160" plus type deer being harvested and several more were passed because they did decline from the previous year.  Two years ago, I measured a 192", 188", 182" and 178" all harvested from low fences in San Saba County, likely the best year ever that records or anyone's memory recorded.
There are few than a half dozen of San Saba bucks entered into Boone and Crockett Club records as well.

Historically, this county has been strong agriculture (corn, cotton, peanuts, pecans) and then most recently cattle, sheep and goats.  And currently, the sheep and goats are few and far between (thank goodness) and now cattle and deer are king of the hill.  So, deer management has been late coming and slow to start in this county but it is now catching on.  The best antlers are yet to come in this county now that interest and education is increasing.  I know of several giant middle aged bucks that just may surprise everyone once they mature and the weather treats them well.   This coming fall is shaping up to be a great year due to the abundant and perfectly timed rains, so perhaps a few monsters will show up this year, I hope so.

Re: Fawning Dates

well that is cool i wish i could have seen you there but didnt know about you, joe ellis is our ranch owner and another question do you know what the biggest deer shot in the county is

Re: Fawning Dates

Yes sir, the meeting was May 1st and I was there.  Mike Krueger is a good friend of mine and he invited me out, along with Joe Ellis, a local landowner.  I spent most of my time near the fish fryer and cooks eating and visiting while Mike did the jawbone aging with the different groups of hunters.  It was a good day for such and a decent turnout with some mightly good food.
Your lease is west of San Saba while my ranch is due north of town about a dozen miles.  As a crow flies, however, our places are less than 13-14 miles apart.

Re: Fawning Dates

Last year was indeed one of the worst hunting years I have ever experienced in San Saba County.  I really can't put my finger on the exact reason(s) but it was "off" for everyone in the area.  Mature trophy bucks were way off, numbers were way off, fawns were way off and hunting success was way down.  The one and only deer processor in town reported the worst business year he could remember as far as sheer numbers go and he commented that the quality was off as well.  Two years ago, on opening weekend, they accepted 369 deer into their coolers.  Last year they accepted less than one hundred!  And opening weekend and Thanksgiving weekend are their business two weekends of the entire year.
On my own ranch, antlers and deer movement were noticeably off as well.  We harvested only one mature trophy buck and one mature management buck and that was it.  No does, no culls, nada, two deer all year long because the population simply did not warrant it.  My neighbors also experienced the same results and it was a long, depressing season locally.

So far, the table is set for much improvement.  Fawn survival appears to be very high thus far, the rains have been perfectly timed and plentiful and deer movement appears to be very good.  I see deer often in my travels locally and I think we are set for a great hunting season this year.

Re: Fawning Dates

Macy have you notice the deer hunting getting worse or better in san saba cause this past hunting season we didnt see the number of deer we normally see do you have any idea of what the problem is but we saw alot of fawns last year but alot died of from predators

Re: Fawning Dates

It was a rough weekend for fawns in San Saba County, central Texas.  Wheat harvest time is here and the local combines found many fawns over this long weekend.  My phone rang off the hook with folks calling wanting to know what they should do with fawns they found.  Some were injured, some were not, but many were found this weekend.
While working on my own ranch this morning, my son and I found a newborn fawn obviously eaten by some predator.  It was very fresh and all that was left was the head, neck and spine.

It is that time of year, so if you have not began your predator control program, you better get started sooner than later.  Feral hogs, coyotes, bobcats, fox and feral dogs and cats are prime suspects for fawn mortality, so get active and get aggressive and work to save a few fawns.  Remember, you can't shoot a trophy buck in five years if he doesn't survive the first two weeks of life.

Re: Fawning Dates

Saw the first fawn here in Montgomery County this morning. Judging by his agility and mobility I'm guessing he was at least a week or more old. This is the earliest by at least  7 to 10 days that we have seen a fawn in the open in the 7 years that we have lived here.
